Marvel One Shots (All embedded on one page with links!)

If you're familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), you might know that there are also five short films, called Marvel One-Shots, that were released with the DVD release of a number of films. If you've seen all of the MCU movies and watch the "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." TV show, you should know that these one-shots are also considered part of the MCU.

I know some MCU fans that have yet to see all of these short films. I suspect some of this is because these were released with the DVD of the Blu-Ray for their corresponding films but are not on the DVD that you would get from Netflix (nor are they available to stream on Netflix).

Since it was announced that, like "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", the "Guardians of the Galaxy" DVD release on December 9th will not have a one-shot, I decided to post the five one-shots so far below, with a little description for each one. The title is also a link to the site where the embedded video is located.

Please note that some of these were uploaded by users in other countries so a couple of the videos have subtitles.

ENJOY!!!

The Consultant - Released on September 13, 2011 as part of the "Thor" DVD release:

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer - Released on October 25, 2011 as part of the "Captain America: The First Avenger" DVD release, it displays the full badassery of Agent Phil Coulson.

Item 47 - Released on September 25, 2012 as part of "The Avengers" DVD release. Incidentally, I read somewhere that this one-shot was the reason Marvel decided to go ahead with producing an "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." TV show.

Agent Carter - Released September 3, 2013 with the "Iron Man 3" digital release. This is my favorite of the one-shots and is also the reason Hayley Atwell is getting her own eight episode "Agent Carter" TV series in January 2015 that will air during the "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." time block on ABC.

All Hail the King - Released February 4, 2014 with the "Thor: The Dark World" digital release. This one stars Ben Kingsley (Gandhi himself!) in his role from "Iron Man 3".

SNL - Marvel's Coming Attractions - SNL Sketch - Chris Pratt

MARVEL CAN'T FAIL! (Saturday Night Live, however, is another story. This seemed to be the only funny sketch in the episode, with the birthday wish of the toys coming to life a distant second.)

Why Starbucks Spells Your Name Wrong

VALLURU! LOL!!!!! (This video drops a few F-bombs so it's NSFW.)
"When I hear a customer's name, I immediately think, 'How can I spell this name in an obnoxious way that will infuriate and perplex them?'"

When Your Skin Smells Sandalwood Oil, It Heals Itself | PBS NOVAnext

This is absolutely fascinating:
"Hanns Hatt's lab at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany focused on skin, which is easier to study, and tested the response to scents of receptors in keratinocytes, the main skin cell type.
They found that Sandalore – a synthetic sandalwood oil used in aromatherapy, perfumes and skin care products – bound to an olfactory receptor in skin called OR2AT4. Rather than sending a message to the brain, as nose receptors do, the receptor triggered cells to divide and migrate, important processes in repairing damaged skin."

Fantastic New Ad Encouraging Girls to Explore Science and Math

I have to admit, as a father of two young girls, this ad hit home even though I try to be as encouraging about science and math as possible.

There was a nice writeup in Huffington Post about it as well, which mentioned this troubling statistic:
"...66 percent of 4th grade girls say they like science and math, but only 18 percent of all college engineering majors are female."

Is Warner Brothers seriously going to make a "SHAZAM" movie?

It is still unconfirmed but rumor has it that Warner Brothers is going to announce the following DC Comics-based movies sometime soon:
May 2016 – Batman v Superman
July 2016 – Shazam
Xmas 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2
The name that jumps out at me is Shazam scheduled for July 2016. While most people these days think of it as a smartphone app and nothing else, the name actually comes from a very campy TV series from the mid-1970's. How campy, you might ask? Well, here you go:

The current state of the big comic book movie universes | Den of Geek

This is a pretty thorough analysis on where the comic book movie universes currently stand. The post starts with a brief mention of the planned Star Wars universe, which probably has enough fans to blow all of these out of the water entirely. However, I am curious to see where it ends up, especially since it's under the same Disney ownership as Marvel and you would hope there is some cross-pollination of ideas. (Although I doubt they'd go whole hog and adopt Patton Oswalt's idea below.)

Superheroes here, superheroes there, superheroes everywhere!

It seems like everyone is warning of superhero fatigue these days, with the new X-Men movie being released today and all:
All three of these posts are great reads.

Patrick Stewart's Appearance on The Colbert Report I The Wrap

Great interview, as always by Stephen Colbert.

An X-Men Crash Course to Prep for "X-Men: Days of Future Past"

Rather than binge watch 12 hours of X-Men movies (of which four of those hours are total crap) before you go see "X-Men: Days of Future Past", just watch the two videos below to get fully caught up on what you need to know. There's a serious video here and a funny one below it. ENJOY!

Pixar Movie Easter Eggs

There are a lot of spelling mistakes and typos in the captions but this is a nice, comprehensive list of a lot of the Pixar Easter Eggs across their films.

Pixar released their own shorter video a few weeks ago:

Both videos are a lot of fun to watch!

The first ten minutes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier!!!

I saw a clip yesterday that was in Spanish and has since been removed. Not sure how long this one will be out there but catch it if you can:

UPDATE: Well, just like the Spanish clip from the day before I posted this video, this one has been removed too. Honestly, just go see the movie itself. It's one of the better movies of the last few years.

Great Behind the Scenes footage of the filming of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"

It's fascinating how movies are really made.  The clip below has 15 minutes of raw footage of the filming of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier".  It gives you a great feel for how much is real stunt work and how much is done later with CGI.  Surprisingly there is more stunt work than I expected.

Don't worry, no real spoilers here.  It's mostly how they filmed the scenes that are already in the trailers.  Enjoy!

Watch an expert teach a smug U.S. senator about Canadian healthcare | Los Angeles Times

This is how you take down someone's ignorance and stupidity:

"BURR: On average, how many Canadian patients on a waiting list die each year? Do you know?
MARTIN: I don’t, sir, but I know that there are 45,000 in America who die waiting because they don’t have insurance at all.
"

Captain America Movie Clip That's NOT in English!

This clip gives you a good idea for the type of action in the new "Captain America: The Winter Soldier". I find it funny that the clip is in German (or at least it sounds like German) considering Cap was fighting the Nazis in the first film:

"This one here is our booty!"

Okay, I'll be the first one to admit that if this film wasn't part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I probably wouldn't see it.  However, I'm glad it is because from all the buzz and the trailer and features released this week it looks pretty good:

Full-length trailer:

No Rocket in the trailer but this feature has Bradley Cooper as Rocket saying the one line in the post title:

There's also a great feature onGamora, played by Zoe Saldana, which shows some of the filming of her fight scene with Karen Gillan's Nebula. While the response to the trailer release has been reported to be overwhelmingly male, I have a feeling having two strong female characters with a reputation as assassins is going to strike an chord with the female audience.

Marvel also release features on the other characters:

Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel):

Drax:

Star-lord/Peter Quill:

Captain America Trailer #1 and its Corresponding Lego Version

Just for kicks, try playing these at the same time side by side, even with the sound on.  It's pretty funny how accurate the Lego version is (except for the Batman and Spiderman easter eggs, which are obviously not in the original).

iMentor Builds Digital and Personal Bonds Between Students and Role Models

Great story on Thirteen's MetroFocus about the iMentor program and, specifically, how it works with the Academy for Software Engineering, where I also serve as a mentor in the iMentor program.

Here is a video from the show about iMentor at AFSE:

Here is another video with the interview with iMentor CEO, Mike O'Brien:

Incidentally, iMentor was also mentioned in the slideshow accompanying President Obama's State of the Union address earlier this week:
